The university was established in 1922 by an Act of the Indian Parliament and was the largest university in India at the time. Governor of the NCT Delhi. GGSIPU is one of the premier public universities in India offering a wide range of graduate and postgraduate courses. GGSIPU functions under the authority given to it by The University Grants Commission (UGC), an autonomous organization under the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India.

GGSIPU is recognized by UGC offering 80 graduate programs in different streams Engineering, Mass Communication, Commerce, Hospitality and Tourism etc with 100 affiliated colleges which includes 76 as self-financed, 24 owned and managed by the government of Delhi/Government of India. Delhi Technological University (DTU) was founded as Delhi Polytechnic in 1941. It began awarding degrees in 1952 after becoming associated with the University of Delhi.
